Mayeaux Minis (Eugenia Uniflora)
This is an exciting find, originating from the yard of Brad Mayeaux in Kenner, not only surviving the artic blast of 2025, but thriving, perhaps because of this. This tree popped out hundreds of fruit three months after New Orleans went down to eighteen degrees and ten inches of snow fell on January 21.
Plants have memories. This one knows what it means to survive the cold. The fruit itself is small. Sweet. One tiny seed in each. None of the resinous flavor that some surinam cherries have.
Brad is not sure the origin, but after doing some research and knowing where he gets a lot of his seeds, I think this might be one of the Missiones, from Marcos at Huertas Urbanas, a selected variety known for its cold hardiness in the Argentinian frost.
When we talk about acclimating seeds to our environment, this is a perfect example. Like me, Brad has worked and trialed hundreds of different varieties throughout the years to find what best works. This one is a definite winner and soon to be growing all over the city of New Orleans and beyond.
Seeds were started in April of 2025.
