You’re invited on the magical mystery tour. Glenn’s Guava is a plant rooted in resilience and uncertainty. In 2019, Glenn Reed gifted a community pot of unknown seedlings to the Mystery Garden at Akili Elementary in the 9th Ward of New Orleans. The young plants were never watered. Some lived. Many died. The kids spread the survivors around the garden.
Some of these went on to flower and set fruit in 2021 or so, but before anything could ripen, the school garden was shut down. The plants were dug up, and the fruit—still green and unfinished—was harvested. From those underripe fruits came viable seeds.
These plants are the offspring of those seeds. They are what remain of a school that didn’t make it, of a garden that was lost. To grow Glenn’s Mystery is to nurture possibility, to continue a story that was almost erased. What it becomes is unknown—and that’s the invitation.
