Banana Pitanga (Eugenia anthropophaga)

from $25.00

Banana Pitanga (Eugenia anthropophaga)
Eugenia anthropophaga, also called Banana Pitanga, is a small fruiting tree native to the Atlantic Forest of southeastern Brazil, first documented in the state of Espírito Santo. It produces small, yellow, ribbed fruits that resemble miniature bananas. The flavor is a mix of pitanga and passionfruit—mildly sweet with a bit of tang.

We sourced our seeds from a trusted grower in Florida and are selecting from this population to develop plants that are well adapted to our climate in New Orleans. It has handled our heat and humidity well so far and seems to do especially well in containers, which makes it a good option for growers in a wide range of climates.

This is a less commonly grown species in the genus Eugenia but one that shows promise for both backyard and small-scale growers interested in fruit diversity and adaptability.
